A similar pair were made for the 1872 London International Exhibition and exhibited by Messrs. Thomas Goode, South Audley Street (now in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, mus. no. 845A-1872.)  This pair form part of a set of six vases in three differing shapes, each displaying a different parts in the production of a ceramic object, from the extraction of raw materials and their processing, through to the skills involved in shaping and decorating a ceramic object and the firing and packaging of the objects.  For an illustration see - The Art Journal - Illustrated catalogue, International Exhibition, London 1871-72, part two The Art-journal catalogue of The International Exhibition: second division 1872, Pg.59.).   In this critic it is stated that, “The artist to whom we are most indebted for the admirable modelling on these vases is Mr. HADLEY, and for the painting the Messrs. CALLOWHILL.”  ( For the work of the latter see the pair of posted below.)

Another pair of vases can be seen in the Reeves Collection, Washington and Lee University, Virginia, where the curator, Ron Fuchs, states “The vases were designed by James Hadley, Royal Worcester's chief modeler, who used as inspiration illustrations from the first book in Europe devoted to Chinese porcelain, "Histoire et Fabrication de la Porcelaine Chinoise" (History of the Manufacture of Chinese Porcelain), published in 1856. It in turn was a loose translation of the Jingdezhen taolu (Records of Jingdezhen Ceramics), published in Jingdezhen, China, in 1815.”

James Hadley, Royal Worcester’s chief modeller, was particularly busy in the late 19th century during the period of the Aesthetic Movement, producing another famous and equally rare anthropomorphic teapot (in two versions) shaped as the torso of a person, male on one side, female on the other.  An example of which is also in the same Reeves Collection.
